Where Academic City sits
Dubai International Academic City is a university town along the Dubai–Al Ain Road, set up as a shared campus for schools, colleges and universities. It is home to more than twenty institutions, among them Heriot-Watt University, Murdoch University Dubai, BITS Pilani Dubai, Manipal Academy of Higher Education and Amity University Dubai. The closest community is Dubai Silicon Oasis, which is where many students and staff find housing, shops and services.
Because campuses sit in a large dedicated zone, the daily journey is usually between three places: home, campus and a shopping or leisure area elsewhere in Dubai. Public transport covers parts of that triangle, but a car changes the timing of everything outside lecture hours.
Who rents a car here, and which plan fits
| Who | Typical need | Plan to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Student aged 21 or over | Commute, part-time job, weekend trips | Monthly |
| Visiting lecturer or examiner | A week or two of campus and hotel travel | Weekly |
| Faculty or staff relocating | A car while a purchase or lease is arranged | Monthly |
| Parents visiting a student | A few days of travel with family | Daily or weekly |
Students on a tight budget usually compare economy cars, which cost less to run and are easy to park on a busy campus. Faculty and visitors who carry luggage or travel with family should also check midsize cars. Live rates appear in the vehicle list above, and the final cost depends on dates, mileage, deposit and extras shown in your quote.
Planning a term-length rental
Academic calendars do not match rental periods, so work backwards from the dates you need the car. A monthly car rental fits a semester commute, and the allowance is stated per month: the published terms list 2,500 km for economy, standard and SUV classes, with excess kilometres at AED 0.50 per km. For a short exam period or a visitor’s stay, a weekly rental avoids paying for weeks you will not drive.
If you may leave early because your course ends or plans change, ask what the early-return terms are before you book and have the answer in writing. Share a car with housemates only if everyone who will drive is listed as an additional driver, because every driver must meet the same age and licence rule.
Age and licence for students
The minimum age to rent is 21. Drivers aged 21 to under 25 may be accepted subject to approval and additional charges, so a student in that range should ask about both before reserving. Drivers under 21 cannot rent. You need a driving licence that is valid and recognised in the UAE for the vehicle. Whether a foreign licence or an international driving permit is enough depends on the licence’s country of issue, so confirm this in the written quote rather than assuming it.
Handover on or near campus
Campus zones have gates and visitor rules, and a delivery driver needs to know where to stop. Tell us if the handover should happen at a hostel, an apartment in the area or a nearby public spot, and send a map pin and a contact number. Delivery within Dubai needs at least four hours’ notice, and whether your exact address is covered, plus the fee, is confirmed in the written quote. If you live in the neighbouring community, the Dubai Silicon Oasis page covers handover there.
At handover, check the fuel level and odometer, note existing marks and keep photographs. Fuel is returned at about the level you collected. Salik is charged at the actual toll plus an administration fee and can be settled from the deposit, which is refunded within 21 calendar days after fines and other charges are cleared. Rentals stay within the UAE unless authorised in writing.
Documents and budget checks before you book
Ask which documents are needed for your residency status and have them ready before you request the quote. Students and staff often hold different visa types, and the list that applies to you is confirmed in the written quote, so do not assume a student ID or a university letter replaces anything.
Build a monthly budget from four lines: the rental rate, the deposit held on your card, Salik tolls and fuel. Depending on your route into the city, some trips may pass Salik gates, so estimate your weekly distance and compare it with the monthly allowance before you accept. If you expect to exceed it, price the excess at AED 0.50 per km for the standard classes, or ask whether a class with a higher allowance works out better over the month.
Agree the return point and time in writing. A return after the grace period is charged as a full rental day, so plan your last lecture or exam day with a buffer rather than handing the car back in a rush.
Read the terms and conditions before paying, and if you need something that is not shown here, the full range of the wider Quick Lease fleet is on the main site.
