Hybrid vs Electric vs Petrol: Which Rental Car Is Cheapest to Run in Dubai?

Quick answer: In Dubai, an electric car charged on public AC chargers is usually the cheapest to run (roughly AED 0.12–0.14 per km), followed by a hybrid (about AED 0.17–0.20 per km) and a petrol car (about AED 0.25–0.35 per km for typical sedans and crossovers). If you rely on DC fast charging, an EV costs about the same as a hybrid. Your charging access decides the winner.

Three cars. Same 2,000 km month. Three very different fuel bills.

With petrol prices jumping more than 60% at one point this year, many renters are asking whether a hybrid or electric car would save money. The answer depends less on the car and more on how you'd fuel it.

This comparison covers the three powertrains in general. For specific models and charging options, see our guide to electric and hybrid rentals.

The verdict first

  • Choose electric if you can charge regularly on AC chargers (home, work or malls) and mostly drive within Dubai.
  • Choose a hybrid if you can't rely on charging, drive a lot in city traffic, or take frequent long trips.
  • Choose petrol if your mileage is low, you need a specific model, or you want the simplest, most familiar experience.

The assumptions

Assumption Petrol Hybrid Electric
Consumption (real-world, approx.) 8 L/100 km 5 L/100 km 17 kWh/100 km
Energy price AED 3.69/L (Special 95, Sept 2026) AED 3.69/L AED 0.735/kWh AC or AED 1.26/kWh DC (incl. VAT)

Home charging rates depend on your emirate, tariff and building, and aren't always available to renters, so we show public charging as the main case.

Cost per 100 km

Powertrain Cost per 100 km Cost per km
Petrol (8 L/100 km) ~AED 29.50 ~AED 0.30
Hybrid (5 L/100 km) ~AED 18.45 ~AED 0.18
Electric, public AC charging ~AED 12.50 ~AED 0.13
Electric, DC fast charging ~AED 21.40 ~AED 0.21
Electric, home charging (~AED 0.30/kWh) ~AED 5.10 ~AED 0.05

Monthly running cost by distance

Monthly km Petrol Hybrid EV (public AC) EV (DC fast)
1,000 ~AED 295 ~AED 185 ~AED 125 ~AED 214
2,000 ~AED 590 ~AED 369 ~AED 250 ~AED 428
3,000 ~AED 886 ~AED 554 ~AED 375 ~AED 643

What the numbers mean

An EV is only cheapest if you charge cheaply. On AC chargers, an EV costs less than half as much per km as a petrol car. On DC fast chargers, it costs more than a hybrid.

Hybrids are the reliable middle ground. No charging needed, no range planning, and they cut fuel costs by roughly 35–40% versus a comparable petrol car.

Petrol is cheapest only at low mileage, when a lower rental rate outweighs the fuel saving of an electrified car.

Which is cheapest for your situation?

Your situation Cheapest option
Can charge at home or work, mostly city driving Electric
Can't charge regularly, lots of city driving Hybrid
High mileage with frequent long trips Hybrid
Low mileage (under ~800 km/month) Petrol (lower rental rate may win)
Relying on DC fast chargers Hybrid

Try before you commit

A one-month rental is the most reliable way to find out which powertrain suits your life. You'll see your real charging habits, your real fuel use and your real costs. Browse available rental cars by category to compare options.

Three renters, one month: a worked comparison

Aisha lives in JLT, works in Media City and has an AC charger in her building's car park. She drives 1,200 km a month, almost all in Dubai. An EV costs her roughly AED 150 a month in public-rate charging, or far less if she can charge at a lower home rate. Petrol would cost around AED 355.

Rohan lives in Sharjah and commutes to Jebel Ali, 2,800 km a month, with no reliable charging at home or work. A hybrid costs him about AED 515 a month in fuel; a petrol crossover about AED 825. An EV relying on DC fast chargers would cost roughly AED 600, plus the time spent charging.

Mark is visiting for a week, driving 600 km between Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Hatta. The fuel difference between a hybrid and a petrol sedan is only around AED 65, so he chooses on rental rate and comfort.

The pattern is clear: charging access and distance decide the winner, not the badge on the car.

Beyond fuel: other costs and factors

  • Rental rate. EVs and hybrids can carry slightly higher rental rates. At low mileage, that can cancel the fuel saving.
  • Time. Charging takes time. AC charging suits long stops; DC fast charging takes 30–45 minutes for most EVs.
  • Range. Most modern EVs cover 300–500 km on a charge, enough for most Dubai driving. Long trips need planning.
  • Air-conditioning. All powertrains use more energy in summer. EV range drops with heavy AC use.
  • Salik and parking. Rental cars pay the same tolls and parking regardless of powertrain.

Where to charge if you choose electric

DEWA's EV Green Charger network had more than 1,860 charging points by early 2026, and visitors can use Guest Mode by scanning a QR code. Our guide to EV charging stations in Dubai explains how it works.

Plug-in hybrids: the best of both?

Plug-in hybrids like BYD's DM-i models run on electricity for short trips when charged and as efficient hybrids when not. If you can charge sometimes but not always, they often deliver the lowest real-world cost without range worries. Our comparison of BYD hybrid vs petrol crossovers runs the numbers.

Key takeaways

  • EVs on public AC charging are cheapest per km in Dubai, at roughly AED 0.13.
  • Hybrids cost about AED 0.18 per km and need no charging.
  • Petrol cars cost about AED 0.30 per km for a typical sedan or crossover.
  • DC fast charging makes an EV cost about the same as, or more than, a hybrid.
