Usually yes. Even uncharged, BYD plug-in hybrids typically use around 5–6 L/100 km versus 8–10 L/100 km for comparable petrol crossovers.
BYD Hybrid vs Petrol Crossover: Which Costs Less to Run in the UAE?
Quick answer: A BYD plug-in hybrid (DM-i) usually costs less to run than a comparable petrol crossover in the UAE. Even without charging, its hybrid system typically uses around 5–6 L/100 km versus 8–10 L/100 km for a petrol crossover. With regular charging, short daily trips can run largely on electricity at a fraction of petrol cost.
Petrol prices haven't been kind this year. Special 95 hit AED 3.83 a litre in June 2026 and was still AED 3.69 in September, compared with AED 2.33 in February.
That's pushed a lot of renters to look at hybrids for the first time, and BYD's plug-in hybrids keep coming up.
This comparison looks only at running costs: fuel, charging and how much you'd actually save each month. For the bigger picture on electric and hybrid rentals, see our EV rental guide for the UAE.
What is a BYD DM-i hybrid?
DM-i is BYD's plug-in hybrid system. The car has a petrol engine and an electric motor powered by a battery you can charge from a plug.
Two things make it efficient. First, it drives on electricity alone for a meaningful range when charged. Second, even when the battery is low, the system works like a very efficient hybrid, with the electric motor doing most of the driving at city speeds.
You don't have to charge it. You'll just save more if you do.
The comparison: assumptions
We compared a BYD plug-in hybrid crossover with a typical petrol crossover of similar size. Real-world figures vary with driving style, temperature and air-conditioning use.
| Assumption | BYD plug-in hybrid | Petrol crossover |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel use, battery depleted | ~5.5 L/100 km | ~9 L/100 km |
| Electricity use in EV mode | ~18 kWh/100 km | Not applicable |
| Petrol price (Sept 2026) | AED 3.69/L | AED 3.69/L |
| Public AC charging (incl. VAT) | AED 0.735/kWh | Not applicable |
Monthly running cost at 2,000 km
Scenario A: never charged. The hybrid runs on petrol only, but efficiently.
Scenario B: half the distance on electricity. Typical for someone who charges at work or a mall two or three times a week.
| Scenario | BYD hybrid monthly cost | Petrol crossover monthly cost | Monthly saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| A: Never charged | ~AED 406 | ~AED 664 | ~AED 258 |
| B: 50% electric (public AC) | ~AED 335 | ~AED 664 | ~AED 329 |
| C: 50% electric (home charging, ~AED 0.30/kWh) | ~AED 257 | ~AED 664 | ~AED 407 |
Home charging rates depend on your emirate, tariff and building. Abu Dhabi residential charging, for example, has been quoted at around 30 fils per kWh once a dedicated meter is active.
BYD vs petrol crossover: the verdict
- Choose a BYD plug-in hybrid if you drive 1,500 km or more a month, spend time in city traffic, or can charge at least occasionally.
- Choose a petrol crossover if you want the most familiar driving experience, mostly drive long highway distances, or need a specific model that isn't available as a hybrid.
If you want to try one, you can rent BYD Dubai models on daily, weekly or monthly plans. A month is long enough to see the real difference on your own routes.
Who saves the most?
High-mileage drivers. The more you drive, the bigger the gap. At 3,000 km a month, Scenario A saves roughly AED 390 a month.
City drivers with short trips. Stop-start traffic is where hybrids shine and petrol cars are least efficient.
People who can charge easily. Access to a charger at work, a mall you visit often or home turns the hybrid into mostly an EV for daily driving.
Who saves least? Drivers who mostly cruise on open highways at high speed. Hybrids still win, but by less.
Beyond fuel: other running cost factors
- Salik and parking: Same for both in a rental. EV-specific perks like free Salik tags generally apply to registered owners of fully electric cars, not rental hybrids.
- Servicing: Included in most rentals, so not a renter's concern.
- Range anxiety: None. A plug-in hybrid can always run on petrol.
- Charging time: Optional. If you can't charge, you still save.
Charging tips for BYD hybrid renters
Charge when it's convenient, not because you have to. Mall AC chargers during shopping trips are an easy win. For where to plug in, our guide to EV charging stations in Dubai explains DEWA's Green Charger network and Guest Mode.
DC fast charging costs more per kWh (AED 1.26 including VAT). For a plug-in hybrid, AC charging gives better value.
Key takeaways
- BYD plug-in hybrids use roughly 5–6 L/100 km even uncharged, versus 8–10 L/100 km for petrol crossovers.
- At 2,000 km a month, savings run from about AED 260 (never charged) to over AED 400 (home charging).
- High-mileage city drivers save most.
- You never need to charge, but charging increases the saving.
