Is Company Car Leasing Tax-Deductible in the UAE? Corporate Tax & VAT Basics

Quick answer: Under UAE Corporate Tax, lease costs for vehicles used wholly and exclusively for business are generally deductible expenses; mixed-use vehicles may need apportionment. For VAT, input tax on leased vans and goods vehicles used for business is usually recoverable, but input VAT on passenger cars available for employees' personal use is typically blocked. Always confirm your position with a UAE tax adviser.

Your accountant asks for the vehicle lease invoices. Your sales manager asks whether the company car is "tax-free". Your CFO asks why input VAT on the CEO's SUV was rejected.

Business vehicles sit right where Corporate Tax and VAT rules meet, and the answers depend on how the vehicle is used.

This guide covers the basics so you can have a better conversation with your adviser. It isn't tax advice. If you're setting up a fleet, our company car leasing options are structured to give you clear, VAT-compliant monthly invoices.

UAE Corporate Tax in one paragraph

The UAE introduced federal Corporate Tax for financial years starting on or after 1 June 2023. The standard rate is 9% on taxable income above AED 375,000, with 0% on income up to that threshold. Small Business Relief has been available for eligible resident businesses with revenue at or below AED 3 million, for tax periods ending on or before 31 December 2026. Taxable income starts from accounting profit, then applies adjustments set out in the law.

Are vehicle lease costs deductible?

The general principle: expenses incurred wholly and exclusively for the purpose of the business are deductible, unless the law specifically restricts them.

For leased vehicles, that usually means:

  • Vans, pickups and delivery vehicles used only for business: lease costs are generally deductible.
  • Pool cars used for business trips: generally deductible.
  • Cars used partly for personal purposes: the business portion is generally deductible; the personal portion may need adjusting.

Fuel, Salik, parking, insurance and maintenance for business use follow the same principle.

Mixed use: where it gets tricky

A car given to a manager who uses it to commute, visit clients and do weekend shopping has mixed use. The business needs a reasonable basis to show what portion is for business.

Practical approaches companies use include mileage logs, clear vehicle policies and treating the private element as an employee benefit. The right method depends on your circumstances and how your adviser interprets the rules.

How the lease is accounted for

Under IFRS 16, many leases longer than 12 months are recorded on the balance sheet as a right-of-use asset and a lease liability. Instead of a single rental expense, the income statement shows depreciation and interest.

Short-term leases (12 months or less) and low-value leases can often be expensed directly. For Corporate Tax, the starting point is your accounting profit, so how you account for the lease affects the timing of deductions. Your auditor and tax adviser should align on this.

VAT on car leases: the basics

VAT is charged at 5% on vehicle leases and rentals in the UAE. Whether your business can recover that input VAT depends on the vehicle and its use.

Generally recoverable:

  • Vans, pickups and goods vehicles used for business.
  • Vehicles used exclusively for business, such as delivery cars or taxis.

Generally blocked:

  • Input VAT on "motor vehicles" (broadly, passenger vehicles designed to carry up to 10 people) that are available for the personal use of employees or others.

That second point surprises many businesses. If a company car is available for an employee's personal use, even partly, input VAT on it is usually not recoverable. For businesses where VAT recovery matters, commercial vehicles used purely for business are usually the cleanest; our Quick Lease commercial fleet includes vans and pickups on short-term and long-term plans.

Vehicle type Typical Corporate Tax treatment Typical input VAT treatment
Delivery van (business only) Deductible Generally recoverable
Pickup for site work Deductible Generally recoverable
Pool car (business trips only) Deductible Generally recoverable if no personal use
Manager's car with personal use Business portion deductible Generally blocked
Leased car provided as employee benefit Usually deductible as employee cost Generally blocked

Salik and parking: VAT changed in June 2026

Since 1 June 2026, Salik and Parkin charge 5% VAT on toll and parking services. For businesses, that means updating expense categories, ERP mappings and reimbursement forms. Input VAT on business-related tolls and parking may be recoverable with valid tax invoices, subject to the same personal-use restrictions.

Allowance vs company car: a tax angle

Paying an employee a car allowance and providing a leased company car are treated differently for VAT and administration. With an allowance, the company doesn't recover VAT on the vehicle (the employee incurs it). With a leased car, VAT recovery depends on personal use. We compare the two in detail in our guide to car allowance vs company car in the UAE (publishing 27 October).

Records to keep

  • Lease agreements and monthly tax invoices showing VAT separately.
  • Vehicle assignment records: who uses which car, and for what.
  • Mileage logs for mixed-use vehicles.
  • Fuel, Salik, parking and maintenance receipts.
  • Your vehicle policy, signed by employees.

Key takeaways

  • Mixed-use cars may need apportionment or benefit treatment.
  • Input VAT on vans and goods vehicles is usually recoverable; on passenger cars with personal use, it's usually blocked.
  • Salik and parking carry 5% VAT from 1 June 2026; update your expense coding.
