About 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes, covering roughly 120–140 km depending on your route.
Weekend Road Trip from Dubai to Fujairah's East Coast Beaches
Quick answer: A Dubai to Fujairah road trip covers about 120–140 km and takes roughly 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes via the E88 through Al Dhaid and Masafi, or via the Sheikh Khalifa Highway (E84) through the mountain tunnels. Spend a night on the coast at Al Aqah, snorkel at Snoopy Island, visit Al Bidyah Mosque and drive back through Masafi.
There's a moment on the drive east when the dunes give way to dark, jagged mountains. Twenty minutes later, you're looking at a different sea.
Fujairah's coast faces the Gulf of Oman, not the Arabian Gulf. The water's often clearer, the beaches quieter and the pace slower. For Dubai residents, it's the easiest "feels like a holiday" weekend there is.
This itinerary is one of the favourites in our Quick Lease road-trip guide. Here's how to plan it.
Routes from Dubai to Fujairah
| Route | Distance (approx.) | Drive time (approx.) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| E611/E311 → E88 via Al Dhaid & Masafi | 130 km | 1h 30m–1h 45m | Masafi market stop, classic route |
| E611 → E84 Sheikh Khalifa Highway | 125 km | 1h 25m–1h 40m | Mountain tunnels, faster to Fujairah city |
| Via Dibba (northern route) | 160 km+ | 2h+ | Going straight to Dibba and Al Aqah |
From Downtown or Business Bay: Join Emirates Road (E611) or Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road (E311) towards Sharjah, then follow signs for Al Dhaid/Fujairah.
From Dubai Marina: E311 north is usually easiest.
There are no tolls once you leave Dubai. Fill up before the mountain stretch, as stations thin out between Al Dhaid and Masafi.
Day 1: Masafi, Fujairah city and the coast
8:00am – Leave Dubai. Beat the Sharjah traffic and the heat.
9:15am – Masafi Friday Market. Despite the name, it's open most days. Carpets, pottery, plants and fresh fruit. Park on firm ground beside the stalls.
10:30am – Fujairah city. Visit the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, one of the largest in the UAE, then Fujairah Fort, one of the country's oldest. Dress modestly for both.
12:30pm – Lunch on the corniche. Seafood is the obvious choice here.
2:30pm – Drive north along the coast to Al Aqah. Around 45 minutes, with mountains on one side and sea on the other.
4:00pm – Check in and hit the beach. Al Aqah's resorts line a long sandy stretch. Watch the sunset over the mountains behind you.
Day 2: Snoopy Island, Al Bidyah and Dibba
8:00am – Snorkel at Snoopy Island. The small rocky island off Al Aqah beach is named for its resemblance to the cartoon dog lying on its back. Morning water is calmest and clearest. Many resorts rent snorkelling gear and kayaks.
11:00am – Al Bidyah Mosque. About 15 minutes south. Believed to be the UAE's oldest mosque still in use, it's small, whitewashed and beautiful. Climb the path behind it to the watchtowers for views.
12:30pm – Lunch in Dibba. Dibba Al Fujairah has simple seafood restaurants and a pretty harbour.
2:30pm – Drive home. Return via Masafi (E89 then E88) or the coast road. Back in Dubai around 5pm.
A note on Dibba and the Oman border
Dibba is divided between the UAE (Dibba Al Fujairah and Dibba Al Hisn) and Oman (Daba Al Baya, part of Musandam). The border is clearly marked with a checkpoint.
Don't cross into Omani Dibba in a rental car without written permission from the rental company and valid Oman insurance. Without both, you're uninsured from the moment you cross. Some dhow cruises from Dibba depart from the Omani side; check where yours leaves from before you go.
Best Fujairah beaches by car
- Al Aqah Beach: Resorts, calm water and Snoopy Island.
- Dibba Beach: Quieter, local feel, good for families.
- Fujairah Corniche: City beach with promenade and cafés.
- Kalba Beach and Khor Kalba (Sharjah, south of Fujairah): Mangroves, kayaking and birdlife.
Which car to rent
Every stop on this route is on paved roads. A sedan handles it fine.
For couples with weekend bags, a compact car is plenty. Families with snorkelling gear, beach bags and a cool box will appreciate a crossover or SUV. If you're planning several weekend trips, our seven-day car rental plans often work out cheaper than two separate weekend rentals, and cover school-run days in between.
Driving tips for the east coast
- Speed cameras are frequent on the E88 and coast road. Fujairah applies the federal rules and the usual 20 km/h buffer, but stick to the posted limits.
- Watch for goats and camels near mountain roads.
- Mountain tunnels on the E84 are long; switch on headlights.
- After heavy rain, avoid wadis. Entering flowing water carries a AED 2,000 fine, 23 black points and impoundment.
Pair it with other drives
Love mountain scenery? Try the drive to Jebel Jais for altitude, or Dubai to Hatta by car for a shorter day trip.
Best time to go
October to April. November to March is ideal for beaches and snorkelling, with sea temperatures still pleasant. Summer is very hot and humid on the east coast.
