What is being tested
The system uses small autonomous electric vehicles that run on dedicated guideways separate from general traffic. Each vehicle carries four to six passengers, travels at up to 50km/h and has a range of up to 250km on one charge, according to The National.
RTA said the trial will assess technical performance, safety and reliability, journey times, ease of use and passenger experience. The data will inform decisions on whether to expand the network elsewhere in Dubai.
Possible Metro links
The trial follows a cooperation agreement between RTA and Glydways, and is being run under a partnership with Dubai Holding covering the test environment, infrastructure and operational support. Gulf News reports that RTA is studying several possible routes, including a 2.8km link between National Paints Metro Station and Bluewaters.
Mark Seeger, founder and co-CEO of Glydways, described the launch as a milestone in the company's collaboration with RTA. Al Tayer said the trial reflects RTA's commitment to testing advanced technologies in Dubai, with a focus on first- and last-mile connections.
What This Means for UAE Drivers and Commuters
This is a trial on one island, not a public service rollout, and RTA has not announced a decision on expansion. It is separate from Dubai's driverless robotaxi service, which runs on public roads. For commuters, the practical question is whether such pods could shorten walks between Metro stations and dense destinations. RTA will decide after reviewing the four-week data.
