Dubai Unveils Glydways Autonomous EV Pod Network to Ease Congestion

Dubai announced plans in February 2026 to launch a network of small, autonomous electric vehicles developed by US firm Glydways, linked to the Metro network, as part of the emirate's long-term strategy to tackle traffic congestion. The announcement was made at the World Governments Summit.

How the System Would Work

The Glydways system uses compact, AI-controlled electric vehicles that give each passenger their own private pod rather than a shared vehicle, targeting throughput of 10,000 passengers per hour per direction at speeds of up to 50kph — comparable, organisers said, to a train operating in a dedicated lane. Glydways chief executive Mark Seeger said fares would be comparable to a bus or train ticket, with booking similar to hailing a taxi.

Trials were planned to begin within the year of the announcement, with a full rollout targeted within roughly two years, though an exact launch date and pricing structure had not been finalised at the time of the announcement.

UAE Relevance

The project reflects Dubai's broader approach of layering multiple new mobility technologies — autonomous taxis, electric buses, and now small-format autonomous pods — onto its existing Metro and road network, rather than relying on any single solution to manage growing traffic volumes as the city's population expands.

For UAE residents, a successful rollout would offer an additional low-cost, driverless transport option feeding into Metro stations, potentially reducing reliance on private vehicles, taxis or ride-hailing for short first-and-last-mile journeys.
