October Half-Term Road Trips from Dubai for Families

Quick answer: Schools following the UAE's unified calendar break for mid-term from 12 October 2026, returning on 19 October. The best half-term road trips from Dubai are Hatta, Al Ain and Jebel Hafeet, Abu Dhabi's islands, Jebel Jais, Fujairah's east coast, Sharjah's Mleiha and Ras Al Khaimah's Al Marjan Island. October is still warm, so plan outdoor time for mornings.

The kids are off for a week. Flights are expensive. And you've already done every mall in a 20-minute radius.

A road trip is the obvious answer. The October half-term is the first proper break of the 2026–27 school year, running from Monday 12 October for schools on the Ministry of Education's unified calendar.

One honest warning before the list: October in the UAE isn't winter yet. Expect mid-30s by midday. The trick is to drive early, do the outdoor bit before 11am, and save indoor or water activities for the afternoon.

Jebel Jais ~2h Cool air, views Overnight ideal

1. Hatta: the easy mountain escape

Hatta Dam's turquoise water and the Hatta Wadi Hub's bikes, ziplines and slides keep kids busy for hours. Go early: kayaking at 9am is pleasant in October, at 1pm less so. Our full Dubai to Hatta by car guide has the route and stops.

2. Al Ain and Jebel Hafeet: zoo plus a mountain road

Al Ain Zoo is one of the best family attractions in the country, and it opens into the evening. Combine it with the drive up Jebel Hafeet, a smooth, winding road to a viewpoint around 1,200 m up. Sunset from the top is the highlight. Al Ain is relaxed and easy to drive in, with free parking at most attractions.

3. Abu Dhabi's islands: theme parks and beaches

Yas Island has Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld, Warner Bros. World and SeaWorld within a few minutes of each other. Saadiyat has calm beaches and the Louvre Abu Dhabi. It's a lot for one day, so consider one night.

Know the tolls. Abu Dhabi's Darb charges AED 4 per crossing at its bridge gates during weekday peaks, and two newer gates at Ghantoot and Al Qurm charge AED 4 at all hours.

4. Jebel Jais: escape the heat

The UAE's highest peak, in Ras Al Khaimah, is usually around 10°C cooler than the coast. The road up is spectacular. Older kids love the Jais Flight zipline (height and weight limits apply); younger ones enjoy the viewing decks. A detailed road guide publishes on 14 October.

5. Fujairah's east coast: the calmer sea

The Gulf of Oman coast feels like a different country. Snoopy Island at Al Aqah is good for snorkelling, and the water is often clearer than Dubai's. Stop at the Al Bidyah Mosque, the UAE's oldest, on the way to Dibba.

6. Mleiha, Sharjah: fossils and stars

Mleiha Archaeological Centre runs fossil hunts, guided tours and stargazing evenings. It's about an hour from Dubai, so it works as an afternoon-into-evening trip, and the evening sky is the point. Stick to paved roads unless you've booked a guided desert tour.

7. Al Marjan Island, Ras Al Khaimah: an easy resort break

If you want a short break rather than a busy day trip, Al Marjan's beach resorts are 75 minutes away and usually cheaper than Dubai's during half-term. Kids' clubs and pools do the work. You relax.

Picking the right car for a family road trip

For two kids, a midsize sedan is fine for a day trip. For three kids, grandparents or a week away with luggage, size up to an SUV or seven-seater. Booster and child seats should be requested at booking.

If you're doing several trips across the half-term, a weekly car rental Dubai plan usually works out cheaper per day than booking separate days. You'll also skip the repeated pick-up and drop-off.

October road-trip checklist

  • Leave by 7:30am to avoid both traffic and heat.
  • Pack 2 litres of water per person and keep it out of direct sun.
  • Bring sun hats, sunscreen and a cool box for snacks.
  • Download offline maps for mountain areas with patchy signal.
  • Check the weather; October can bring the first storms in the northern emirates.

Key takeaways

  • Mid-term break for unified-calendar schools runs from 12 October 2026, with classes resuming 19 October.
  • Hatta, Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, Jebel Jais, Fujairah, Mleiha and Al Marjan all work from Dubai.
  • October is still hot: plan outdoor activities for early morning.
  • A weekly rental is usually cheaper than several separate day rentals.
