A valid Emirates ID, a valid UAE driving licence and a credit or debit card in the renter's name.
Documents Needed to Rent a Car in Dubai for UAE Residents
Quick answer: UAE residents need three documents to rent a car in Dubai: a valid Emirates ID, a valid UAE driving licence and a credit or debit card in the renter's name. Most companies also require the driver to be at least 21 and to have held a licence for a year. Monthly rentals or premium cars may need extra items such as a passport copy.
You're at the counter. You've picked the car. Then: "Can I see your Emirates ID? The original, please."
It's in a drawer at home.
Getting your documents right takes two minutes and saves a wasted trip. This checklist is for UAE residents only. Visitors and tourists have different rules, covered in our tourist guide linked below.
Your documents also affect your cover: an invalid licence can void insurance entirely. For more on that, see our guide to rental-car insurance in Dubai.
The core documents every resident needs
| Document | Requirement | Common problem |
|---|---|---|
| Emirates ID | Valid, original or approved digital version | Expired or renewal in process |
| UAE driving licence | Valid, original or approved digital version | Expired licence |
| Payment card | Credit or debit card in the renter's name | Card in spouse's or company's name |
1. Emirates ID
Your Emirates ID proves your identity and residency. It must be valid on the day you rent. Many rental companies now accept the digital Emirates ID through the UAE PASS or ICP apps, but some still ask for the physical card, so check before you go.
If your Emirates ID has expired and renewal is in progress, bring your passport, visa page and the renewal application receipt, and call ahead.
2. UAE driving licence
Residents must drive on a UAE licence. Once you hold a residence visa, your home or international licence is no longer enough.
The licence must be valid for the full rental period. Digital licences in the RTA or MOI apps are widely accepted, but bring the physical card if you have it.
3. Credit or debit card
The card must be in the name of the main driver. It's used for the rental payment and, where applicable, a security deposit or pre-authorisation.
Some companies accept debit cards; others require a credit card for the deposit. Quick Lease was one of the first in the UAE to offer deposit-free rentals on eligible bookings, which removes this hurdle for many customers.

Age and licence-history requirements
Most rental companies require:
- A minimum age of 21 for standard cars (sometimes 25 for premium or sports cars).
- A licence held for at least one year.
Younger or newly licensed drivers may face a surcharge or be limited to certain car categories.
Extra documents you might need
For monthly rentals: Some companies ask for a passport copy with your visa page, or an employment or salary letter, especially for longer contracts.
For premium or luxury cars: Expect a higher deposit, a credit card rather than debit, and sometimes a minimum age of 25.
For company-paid rentals: A company letter authorising the rental and, if the company pays, its trade licence and payment details.
For additional drivers: Each extra driver needs their own Emirates ID and UAE licence. Our guide to adding an additional driver explains the process (publishing 27 October).
New arrivals: resident or visitor?
If you've just moved and your residence visa isn't stamped yet, you're still a visitor in the eyes of the rules. Use your passport, entry stamp or visa, and your home licence or International Driving Permit. Our guide on how to rent a car in Dubai as a tourist explains which licences are accepted.
Once your Emirates ID is issued, switch to the resident checklist above and start your UAE licence process.
