How Salik Works on Rental Cars in Dubai (and How It's Billed to You)

Quick answer: Every Dubai rental car carries a Salik tag. Each time you pass a toll gate, the crossing is recorded on the car's account and billed to you: AED 6 at weekday peaks (6–10am, 4–8pm), AED 4 off-peak, free 1–6am, plus 5% VAT since 1 June 2026. Rental companies add the tolls to your final or monthly statement, sometimes with a small service charge.

You won't see a toll booth. You won't stop. You probably won't even notice the overhead gantry.

That's the point of Salik, Dubai's automated toll system. It's also why so many renters get a surprise when their statement arrives with 30 toll crossings they don't remember making.

This guide explains exactly how Salik on a rental car is recorded and billed. For the full picture of driving costs, including parking and Abu Dhabi's Darb, see our UAE tolls and parking guide.

What is Salik?

Salik is Dubai's electronic road toll system, run by Salik Company PJSC since 2007. A small RFID tag on the windscreen is read by overhead gates. Each pass deducts a toll from the account linked to that tag.

As of 2026, Dubai has 10 Salik gates, including Al Barsha, Al Garhoud, Al Maktoum Bridge, Al Mamzar North and South, Al Safa North and South, Airport Tunnel, Jebel Ali and the newer Business Bay Crossing.

Salik rates in 2026

Salik moved to variable pricing on 31 January 2025. Then, on 1 June 2026, 5% VAT was added to toll tariffs and tag activation fees.

How Salik is recorded on a rental car

Your rental car's tag belongs to the rental company's Salik account. When you pass under a gate, the gate logs the plate, the tag, the time and the location.

The rental company then matches each crossing to whoever had the car at that moment. That's why your rental agreement records the exact pick-up and return time. A crossing at 9:58am on the day you returned the car at 10:30am is yours. One at 11:15am isn't.

How you're billed

Billing differs a little by provider, but it generally works like this:

  • Daily and weekly rentals: Tolls are totalled and charged at the end of the rental, usually to the card on file.

  • Monthly rentals: Tolls appear on your monthly statement alongside fines and other usage charges.

  • Service charge: Some companies add a small per-crossing or per-statement admin fee. Ask before you sign.

  • Timing: Salik data can take a day or two to arrive, so tolls are sometimes charged after you've returned the car.

At Quick Lease we list Salik as a separate line on your statement so you can match every crossing to your own trips. When you book car rental Dubai with us, ask the counter team to show you how tolls appear on your agreement.

How much Salik will you actually pay?

It depends on your daily route. Here's a realistic range for a resident commuting five or six days a week.

Commute pattern

Gates per day

Approx. monthly cost (incl. VAT)

One gate each way, both at peak

2

~AED 280

One gate each way, one peak, one off-peak

2

~AED 230

Two gates each way, peak

4

~AED 555

Weekends only, a few trips

4–8 per week

~AED 70–140

Tourists on short trips typically see AED 20–80 in tolls for a week, depending on how often they cross Sheikh Zayed Road and the airport routes.

Five ways to cut your Salik bill

  1. Shift your timing. Driving at 10:05am instead of 9:55am saves AED 2.10 per gate.

  2. Use Al Khail Road or Emirates Road where it makes sense. Navigation apps can avoid tolls, though the alternative may cost you more time and fuel.

  3. Cluster errands. Three trips across Al Garhoud in one day add up. One combined trip doesn't.

  4. Watch double-gate pairs. Al Mamzar North and South, and Al Safa North and South, have rules on charging when you pass both within a short window. Check Salik's site for the current logic.

  5. Plan late-night airport runs. Between 1am and 6am, Salik is free.

Salik vs Darb: don't confuse them

Salik is Dubai's system. Darb is Abu Dhabi's, and it works differently: AED 4 per crossing at bridge gates during peaks (7–9am and 3–7pm, Monday to Saturday), plus two newer gates at Ghantoot and Al Qurm that charge AED 4 at all hours since May 2026. Our Darb toll guide covers that in full (publishing 23 October).

Disputing a Salik charge on your rental

Ask for the crossing log: date, time and gate. Compare it with your agreement's pick-up and return times. If a crossing falls outside your rental window, the company should remove it. If the times match, the charge is valid even if you don't remember the trip.

Key takeaways

  • Salik costs AED 4–6 per gate, plus 5% VAT from 1 June 2026, and is free from 1am to 6am.

  • Rental cars come with a tag; tolls are matched to your rental window and billed to you.

  • Tolls can arrive after the car is returned because data takes a day or two.

  • Timing your trips around peaks is the easiest way to save.
