Nissan Sunny vs Kia Pegas: Best Budget Sedan to Rent in Dubai?

Quick answer: Choose the Nissan Sunny if you want more power for highways, a roomier back seat and a smoother CVT. Choose the Kia Pegas if you want the lowest running costs and mostly drive in the city. Both are affordable, automatic and easy to park; the Sunny is the better all-rounder, the Pegas is the better money-saver.

If you've ever booked a budget car in Dubai, you've probably been offered one of these two. They're everywhere: airport counters, delivery fleets, school-run car parks.

They look similar on paper. They don't feel the same on Sheikh Zayed Road at 110 km/h.

We put the two side by side, using what our customers tell us after renting both. You'll find both in our car rental fleet Dubai line-up, so you can pick based on your trip rather than on what's left on the lot.

The verdict first

  • Choose the Nissan Sunny if you'll drive between emirates, carry adults in the back, or want a quieter cabin at speed.

  • Choose the Kia Pegas if your driving is mostly city errands, you're on the tightest budget, or you want the easiest car to park in Deira or Karama.

  • Choose neither if you're carrying four adults plus luggage to Hatta. Size up to a midsize sedan or crossover.

Driving feel: where the difference shows

Around town, you'll struggle to tell them apart. Both are light, quick to steer and easy in a mall car park.

Merge onto Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and the gap opens. The Sunny's bigger engine and CVT give a steadier pull from 80 to 110 km/h. The Pegas gets there, but you'll hear it working, and overtaking a truck takes more planning.

That matters if you're driving to Abu Dhabi or Ras Al Khaimah. On a 90-minute highway run, a calmer engine is less tiring.

Space and comfort

Rear legroom is where the Sunny earns its reputation. Taxi fleets across the region chose it partly for this reason. Two adults in the back are comfortable on a long drive; three is fine for short hops.

The Pegas is a touch narrower in the back. For a couple, or a family with young children, you won't notice. For three colleagues heading to a site visit, you will.

Boot space is close. Both swallow two large suitcases plus a carry-on, which covers most airport pick-ups.

Fuel economy and running cost

This is where the Pegas wins, though by less than people expect.

Petrol prices have climbed this year. Special 95 was AED 3.69 a litre in September 2026. Assume real-world consumption in Dubai traffic of around 7 L/100 km for the Sunny and 6.5 L/100 km for the Pegas.

The fuel saving is real but small. Rental rates often differ more than fuel costs do, so check both when you compare.

Safety and features

Equipment varies by trim and year, so check the exact car rather than the model name. As a rule, the newer-generation Sunny offers more airbags and driver-assist features in mid and upper trims. Base Pegas versions are simpler, typically with dual front airbags and the essentials.

Both come with air-conditioning strong enough for August. Phone connectivity depends on the trim; many newer units include Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

A note on "budget" versus "cheap"

A budget car doesn't have to feel cheap. Both of these cars are reliable, well-understood and cheap to maintain, which is exactly why fleets love them. If you want to understand where budget cars stop making sense, our guide to budget vs premium car rentals covers that trade-off.

Key takeaways

  • The Sunny is the better all-rounder: more power, more rear space, calmer on highways.

  • The Pegas is the better money-saver for city-only driving.

  • The real-world fuel difference is roughly AED 20–55 a month at typical distances.

  • Compare the rental rate first; it usually outweighs the fuel gap.
